Nutritional counseling, within the context of workplace wellness, refers to a process in which an individual's dietary intake is assessed by a health professional so that they can identify any changes that are required. The health professional, usually a dietitian, provides educational material, support, and ongoing assessment in order to maintain the changes needed.

Nutritional counseling is targeted to a person's need and promotes dietary changes. Nutritional counseling is an active part in the treatment of people with eating disorders or drug/chemical dependencies. Persons that take certain drugs to treat depression and anxiety disorders, for example, can experience a weight gain or loss due to the inhibitors contained in the drugs. In these cases, nutritional counseling can help individual regain a healthy weight through new eating habits that will work with the drug regimen of the individual.

The health professional that is responsible for the assessment is called a nutrition counselor. The counselor and the individual work together to identify areas where nutrition changes are needed and modify current eating patterns.
